Structure
If you’ve completed your manuscript, it’s a great time to engage with an editor to help look at the ‘big picture’ elements and organize your material. A structural edit includes (but is not limited to) the following:
examining which elements are working and which could be rewritten, expanded, cut or changed altogether
writing original material
clarifying themes, narrative, or characters
Style
Every writer has an original voice and style. And it’s an editor's role to maintain this voice and ensure that it is consistent throughout the manuscript. A stylistic edit includes:
establishing or maintaining tone, mood, style, and authorial voice
editing to clarify meaning, improve flow, and refine language
adjusting the length and structure of sentences and paragraphs
eliminating jargon, cliches, hyperbole
Copy
Here’s where we look extra close at your manuscript and get into the nitty-gritty details like word choice, grammar, and punctuation. A copy edit focuses on ensuring correctness, consistency, and completeness. It includes the following:
editing for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage
checking for consistency and continuity of mechanics and facts
editing tables, figures, lists
developing a style sheet
correcting or querying general information that should be checked for accuracy
